Sorella Photoshoot 2015: Behind the Scenes

Our regular sorellas will note lots of beautiful new images to our store recently. And this is because we ran photoshoot recently in Sydney!... sorella lounge robe in pink blush (maternity & womens collection) sorella watson tee (mens collection)   The shoot day and seeing the final results has got to be one of the best parts of working in fashion for me. Yep, it's absolutely also really stressful and you have to be incredibly organised right down to the last little detail like an emergency needle and thread, but I ADORE working with such talented creatives (the models, artists, photographer & support crew), and I also love seeing new styles finally come to life - and old favourites re-styled. There's also time for a bit of silly fun.... We shot...

The faces of Sorella: Fashion Revolution – Who Made Your Clothes?

“On 24 April 2013, 1133 people died in the Rana Plaza catastrophe in Dhaka, Bangladesh. A further 2500 were injured. They were killed while working for familiar fashion brands in one of the many ‘accidents’ that plague the garment industry.” – Fashion Revolution Have you seen some of the following images throughout your social media feed over the past couple of weeks? Have you been asking: What do they mean? Why are they asking this question? How does this affect me?

A lifetime supply of pjs? Who would say no to that!

Anna & Alisha

You may have noticed I’ve been MIA from the sorella-hood since Christmas. Sorry. And thank you to those people who lovingly asked “Where have you been?! When’s your next post?!” Delightful to know you enjoy catching up with us each week in our random silliness! My hiatus from writing probably stemmed from the start of summer (sun, beach, cocktails). I think I must have embraced the week off at Chrissy a little more than I realised. Time to take a little breath. Some stillness. A few stunning sunrises… Resting was fabulous. {If you are a regular in the ‘hood you’ll know I managed to get a little burnt out last year… a follow up post on how I managed getting myself out of that mess is to…

The girl has a voice

It’s not every day you get to say one of your besties is a rock star – even if in response to that title, this friend would say that’s the most ridiculous thing she has ever heard and end up in a fit of laughter. The laugh is infectious. As is the voice. I’m sitting here in the sorella & me office listening to her EP (which our neighbours also get to hear on repeat most days), and I think if anyone has an EP on iTunes, I have paid good-hard-earned money for it, and I really really love it… then said person meets the definition of Rockstar in my book. Meet Livi Robins. Friends since we were 18, Livi and I lived together in…

New styles, photoshoots, and awards!

Hard to believe we are through half of another year isn’t it? Time seems to be flying by, and life with sorella & me has been a big part of that. We have been super busy and have so many exciting things to share with you in the coming months – the first of which is our photoshoot next Friday…. if you think this might indicate we are adding new pieces to the current collection, you’d be right! Stay tuned for some behind the scenes photos next week for your first look of what’s coming!

I will use my Lady-Card. And you should too ~ The Great Australian Gender Card Debacle

I’m confused. Since when has our (now unfortunately former) Prime Minister Julia Gillard played a type of game where a deck of cards are involved? Did our PM unfairly present some sort of ‘Pass Go and collect $200’ card when in 2012 she was faced with cartoons of her naked and wearing a dildo that were emailed to all federal parliamentarians? Did she unfairly play her lady-card in this now infamous speech or was she simply saying, “That’s not acceptable”, and at the same time sending a very crucial and over-due message to the women of Australia who needed to hear it. It seems that as soon as any high profile woman raises questions about comments, judgments or decisions made blatantly to vilify or humiliate…

Beware of the fiery Dragon in her make-shift cyclone bunker. She will eat you up and spit you out if you don’t put that camera away.

WARNING: today is a rant-fest. It’s no secret that we are paying too much for the same product a US or UK shopper can purchase it for.  Regardless of its country of origin, they can have the same item significantly cheaper than we can in Australia.  Some products I have come across are somehow miraculously 70% more expensive as soon as they land on our shores and into our shops. And that, to me, stinks. In case you weren’t aware, we offer the sorella & me women’s and maternity collection to anyone in the world for the same price an Australian pays for it. Why? Because why should an international customer pay more than an Australian customer? They shouldn’t. Why should they pay less than…

Gettin’ bloggie with it!

sorella & me at the ProBlogger Training Event 2012

If you’ve kept an eye on the sorella & me facebook page over the last few days you would have seen that Anna and I were fortunate to spend two days at the ProBlogger Training Event in Melbourne – getting our bloggie on!! The event brings 300 bloggers of all levels together to learn and network. Anna and I really enjoy writing the sorella-hood blog and connecting with you all here, sharing our observations on ‘life’, and hopefully providing you a place to have a laugh (at our expense) or learn something new.  We were grateful for the opportunity to find out how do this better by attending the ProBlogger training – it was such a treat to take some time out to listen and…

A guy walks into a bar and says “Why the pregnant barmaid?”

I will admit I did do a double take as her beautiful belly pushed gently against the serving area. Considering pregnant women and alcohol aren’t generally seen together (although I have heard that beer containing hops may be beneficial? Perhaps a discussion for another time)… I reminded myself, there is no smoke in these environments anymore and it was quite fabulous seeing a woman in all her preggie glory maneuvering her way up and down the narrow serving area, as she had likely done before she was pregnant. It was quite an art and she had it sorted. She looked pretty gorgeous with her big boosies, glowing cheeks, and she looked pretty happy to me. I was a little envious of the inner-goddess she was…

Australian fashion is loaded with toxic chemicals – Organic & Natural fibres are the way to go, says Choice

It’s no surprise for us here at sorella & me to read a report this week by independent consumer watchdog Choice on the toxic chemicals found in Australian clothing and the damage they are doing to our health as well as our environment. In Choice’s report, Andreas Schimkus, a Senior Advisor from the Council of Textile and Fashion Industries of Australia (TCFA) states: “The most dangerous way for a toxin to enter the body is not through the digestive system, but through the skin“ Therefore, any garment in contact with the skin can easily transfer the toxic chemicals used in its manufacture and finishing through to the individual. Further, and perhaps even more alarming, Schimkus says: “Products that are made in China for the Australian…

New designs coming soon from sorella & me maternity sleepwear

anna & alisha of sorella & me maternity sleepwear

Just a brief post today because alisha & I are up to our eyeballs in fabric samples, lace, Pantone colour cards and lots of sketches! After an incredible response to our launch collection, alisha and I are really excited to be back in design phase – Yep! We are in the midst of adding a few new swanky pieces to the collection. Yay! We have had an incredible start to life with our new ‘baby’ – with the sleepless nights and teething problems to boot! But the smiles she brings us every single day makes all the hard work worth it! (sound familiar mummas out there??)

What does it take to build a business with your sibling?

sorella & me maternity sleepwear

Oh my lordy!  Seeing yourself on the cover of a magazine without expecting it is enough to give anyone a heart attack! And while it’s no cover of Vogue (and cover girls we definitely are not) we were chuffed for sorella & me to be included in Business Review Australia’s feature on siblings in business.

Family Road Trips – The sweetest of all childhood memories

Mum & Dad

One of our friends has departed on a big road-trip adventure with her hubbie and two little ones this morning. They have packed up their camper and making their way from Queensland over to Western Australia. Taking around 5 weeks, they are sure to have so many special memories to share with us when they get home – and no doubt their two children, although still quite young, will have happy memories of this special time with their mum and dad (all 4,685 kilometers of it!). It certainly brings back some happy for memories for me thinking about similar traveling we did as a family when my sisters and I were young – back in the 80s! My parents were really good like that –…

Being fair can go a long way. This Fairtrade Fortnight – ask some questions!

kowtow

It’s Fair Trade Fortnight! This a great opportunity for us to understand how making more informed choices on the products we buy can have a huge impact on the lives of those less fortunate. Fairtrade is described by the Fairtrade Association of Australia & NZ (an arm of Fairtrade International) as: Better prices, decent working conditions, local sustainability, and fair terms of trade for farmers and workers in the developing world. By requiring companies to pay sustainable prices, Fairtrade addresses the injustices of conventional trade, which traditionally discriminates against the poorest, weakest producers. It enables them to improve their position and have more control over their lives. Fairtrade International have developed a strict global certification process to allow consumers greater confidence when buying products that…

Keeping it in the family

It’s been just over a month since we launched sorella & me organic maternity sleepwear with our online store.  It’s been a big and exciting lead up and now we are seeing our ‘baby’ develop and grow (she is growing up so fast and so many people love her as much as we do! See here and here!). It’s probably no surprise to some people given how much goes into developing, running, and growing a small business, that I often end up dreaming at night about maternity sleepwear, sewing machines, and sometimes even pregnancy (shhh! don’t tell J1!!).  Those who grew up in a family with a small business or now have a business themselves will know that you eat, sleep and breathe your business –…
