Fiji – The damage & what they need (it begins with C and ends in ASH)

So this week I moved house. And in that move I lost 3 boxes full of my most sentimental possessions. They are gone. Precious items my late-grandmother passed, gifts from my friends and family. Treasured items I have collected over the years on my travels and with past loves now gone.   Out of the 28 boxes I moved, they are the very 3 I did not want to lose. They are me. They represent me and the last 15 years of the woman I have become.    But, at the same time this has all transpired, I have also been talking with our production team in Fjij following the cyclone that hit over a week ago.    The people of Fiji have lost…

Sorella Photoshoot 2015: Behind the Scenes

Our regular sorellas will note lots of beautiful new images to our store recently. And this is because we ran photoshoot recently in Sydney!... sorella lounge robe in pink blush (maternity & womens collection) sorella watson tee (mens collection)   The shoot day and seeing the final results has got to be one of the best parts of working in fashion for me. Yep, it's absolutely also really stressful and you have to be incredibly organised right down to the last little detail like an emergency needle and thread, but I ADORE working with such talented creatives (the models, artists, photographer & support crew), and I also love seeing new styles finally come to life - and old favourites re-styled. There's also time for a bit of silly fun.... We shot...

The faces of Sorella: Fashion Revolution – Who Made Your Clothes?

“On 24 April 2013, 1133 people died in the Rana Plaza catastrophe in Dhaka, Bangladesh. A further 2500 were injured. They were killed while working for familiar fashion brands in one of the many ‘accidents’ that plague the garment industry.” – Fashion Revolution Have you seen some of the following images throughout your social media feed over the past couple of weeks? Have you been asking: What do they mean? Why are they asking this question? How does this affect me?

My life mission: To rid the world of man’s ugly, pilly, baggy track pants and thigh-high polyester shorts

Fathers Day Gift - owens short in evening sky

It’s fathers day in little over 8 days in Australia. Time to celebrate the men in our life. And if your dad is anything like mine (sensitive, grumpy, a little needy, a lot argumentative, and always right…. But also generous, kind-hearted, supportive, totally lovable, and worth enduring the annoying first listed traits) – then might I suggest you avoid risking the ordinary this fathers day? The ordinary being, an ordinary blah blah father’s day gift. My dad always says he doesn’t want anything. But I’ve never seen him turn down a box of Darrell Lea Chocolates come the big day (He has to rely getting those from one of my sisters’ these days though as there are questions whether they ethically source their cacao…. Poor dad). So this year…

sorella sale time!

If you are a sorella-devotee you will note we don’t have sales very often. But it’s the ‘end of financial year’ here in Australia, and with that it means: tax time. And with tax time comes stocktake. And with stocktake comes sitting on the floor for countless hours, days even, counting lots and lots of PJs. You will probably know from my whingeing that I moved house this past week. I survived by the way – but it’s not yet the end. There’s a mountain of boxes still around me and I have been forced to create a very strategic ‘valley’ throughout the house to enable me to get to the most important places one needs – the fridge and the bed. I have even bribed the delivery guy…

You want it? You got it.

While we are still only a baby of a label finding our feet, those that have found us have been devoted since their first restful night sleep in our soft organic Pjs. And they keep coming back for more. And it’s these dedicated fans that shaped our plans this year, and will continue to do so into the future. We have already managed to fulfill one big fan-based request – to launch a mens line. So it is with a big smile and a stack of excitement that we announce the launch of the 2nd big request from our awesome customers this year….The request was clear: “WE WANT IT IN BLACK” So it’s with much pleasure we can now offer all your favourite pieces in…

sneaky-peek behind the scenes! 2013 sorella & me photoshoot

It’s so exciting for us to be so close to launching a few new pieces to our much-loved sorella & me collection. After the success of the new men’s collection, we are sure you will love these new women’s and maternity pieces just as much! You might spot a few of these new pieces! A big thanks to the very talented Harry Mark for putting the video together for us!

Happy Father’s Day 2013

We have had a wonderful response to sorella & me’s recently launched mens collection and we have been very busy bees getting the orders out to you all! Men have certainly been very excited to get their hands on our sleepwear – but it seems that our beautiful female customers who love the organic sleepwear themselves, have also got quite excited about pampering their man and dad with a luxurious short or pant for Father’s Day. And why not? Don’t they deserve the best too?!!!

New styles, photoshoots, and awards!

Hard to believe we are through half of another year isn’t it? Time seems to be flying by, and life with sorella & me has been a big part of that. We have been super busy and have so many exciting things to share with you in the coming months – the first of which is our photoshoot next Friday…. if you think this might indicate we are adding new pieces to the current collection, you’d be right! Stay tuned for some behind the scenes photos next week for your first look of what’s coming!

Capturing the love of a mother with her newborn child

My husband bought LittleOne baby magazine for me when I was pregnant years ago.  I hadn’t seen the magazine before and knew straight away there was going to be something special inside the glossy pages! It has remained as one of my favorites.  I especially love the features they do on children’s bedrooms titled “Baby’s Space’. The current issue of LittleOne baby is no exception and has a beautiful feature on new mums- real mums in the hospital just days after giving birth. Amy Doak mentions in her Publisher’s letter that there is nothing quite like “the look of love on a new mother’s face” (LittleOne baby Issue 10 p8). Photographer Kate Monotti has certainly captured this in the recent shoot. And we were thrilled…

My top 5 (okay, 6) brands to celebrate Fairtrade Fortnight!

It’s Fairtrade Fortnight! This a great opportunity for us to understand how making more informed choices on the products we buy can have a huge impact on the lives of those less fortunate. Fairtrade is described by the Fairtrade Association of Australia & NZ (an arm of Fairtrade International) as: Better prices, decent working conditions, local sustainability, and fair terms of trade for farmers and workers in the developing world. By requiring companies to pay sustainable prices, Fairtrade addresses the injustices of conventional trade, which traditionally discriminates against the poorest, weakest producers. It enables them to improve their position and have more control over their lives. Fairtrade International have developed a strict global certification process to allow consumers greater confidence when buying everyday products that…

Love Peppermint!!!

We were thrilled the sorella & me sleepshirt was included in Peppermint magazine’s Fashion Safari feature for their beautiful Autumn edition! Peppermint “is the green fashion and lifestyle magazine, celebrating eco and ethical style with a fun, fresh, intelligent and positive spin. It was created for the rapidly growing number of consumers who appreciate good design, fashion and creativity, but also care about social and environmental issues and where their clothing comes from.” The perfect place for sorella & me, right? The location of the shoot was the beautiful grounds at Werribee Open Range Zoo in Victoria (which by the way is just 30 minutes from Melbourne and a great place to visit with the kids when you are in town!). Just some of the…

Beware of the fiery Dragon in her make-shift cyclone bunker. She will eat you up and spit you out if you don’t put that camera away.

WARNING: today is a rant-fest. It’s no secret that we are paying too much for the same product a US or UK shopper can purchase it for.  Regardless of its country of origin, they can have the same item significantly cheaper than we can in Australia.  Some products I have come across are somehow miraculously 70% more expensive as soon as they land on our shores and into our shops. And that, to me, stinks. In case you weren’t aware, we offer the sorella & me women’s and maternity collection to anyone in the world for the same price an Australian pays for it. Why? Because why should an international customer pay more than an Australian customer? They shouldn’t. Why should they pay less than…

A G-string is like a landline telephone – no longer necessary

It’s exactly 7 days til my wedding – which is why I am taking the lazy sensible option and re-blogging one of our most popular posts from last year – and it’s timed well given it’s the big V day next week (fyi, no I’m not getting married on Valentines Day, we are the 15th! So no excuses for J1 not to give me flowers 2 days in a row!). I think you will enjoy it – and I thank you for giving me the grace of re-posting while I madly dash out to sort out my fiance’s tie (because apparently I am marrying a man who doesn’t feel the pressure of an important deadline)…. According to a study in 2008, French women spend 20%…

What did you miss in 2012?

Welcome back to the sorella-hood for 2013! We hope you had a wonderful time over Christmas with your family and set for another fantastic year! As parents start to get the back-to-school preparations started, and men and women over the country groan their way back to work (dreaming of any sort of opportunity to be able to quit work and financially fund a permanent residence at the beach), Alisha & I are so excited to be reaching sorella & me‘s first birthday later this month, and can’t wait to see  where this year will take us (it’s going to be hard to top an amazing 2012!). Aside from a overwhelming love of our sleepwear collection, a very surprising aspect of sorella & me last year…

40 ways out of trouble with Fashionista’s Australia

We got lots of great feedback (and sighs of relief) when we posted last weeks round up of the best Christmas gift guides. But there has been one more guide pop up this week we just have to share because a) we know you will love it, b) these girls know what they are talking about when it comes to beautiful things, and c) we are certain it will save you those likely headaches over the next 5 days trying to figure out what your sister really needs as opposed to what she is telling you she wants…. Emily Power and Antonia Acott are Fashionista’s Australia (a must read site to subscribe to by the way!) and they have put together an (aptly named) Last Minute…

No one likes a dud Christmas present.

4 years ago my friend woke up on Christmas morning to a glistening diamond and a proposal for marriage.  By wake up to – I literally mean poked and prodded at the crack of dawn to a handy-cam in her face and before she had time to wipe the sleep from her eyes, her besotted boyfriend was on one knee asking for her hand. (Asking if she wanted time to wake up first prior to asking her to be his wife probably would have been helpful, but he was excited, and bless him he just couldn’t wait). She said yes, of course. What a happy Christmas…. But this poor guy is going to find it hard to top that gift for sure! There are just…

This isn’t another Melbourne Cup fashion report

Melbourne Cup Fever. I have it. But not in the way you’d expect. Fashion I love. But a talent for race day appropriate frocks and fascinators – I do not. Race day to me is (shockingly) about the horses. The track report, the barrier draw, the recent form. Like a nerd who lines up at the Apple store to get the latest iphone the night before it’s released, I love the lead up to the final field sections, the pre-cup predictions, the race day form guide, and of course the actions that follow – taking a punt.

It’s time to give your ‘Mum Uniform’ a comfortable but stylish overhaul

Sitting at the Brisbane airport recently waiting for a flight, I (for a change) was early and this gave me plenty of time to ‘people watch’. Boy there are some colourful characters in the world! It instantly became a reminder for me not to get caught up in the safe world of “mummy fashion”.  You know the style – the good old comfy uniform of ballet flats, slouchy tee, skinny jeans and swipe of lip gloss. It always looks good, but let’s face it, it’s certainly “safe”. There’s nothing like sitting in an airport and a trip to the big smoke to remind us folk from smaller, often more relaxed and casual pastures, that just because you’re 30 plus (plus a bit more!) and a…

We received a really lovely review from Melbourne Blogger Pip Mooney of The Daily Wipe that we thought we’d share today. Pip blogs about parenting, fashion, beauty, and food – and everything in between! Who is the latest celeb to fall pregs, or just gave birth? You’ll hear it first from Pip! Which designer label is set to release a new children’s line? Pip will know about it…. We love her blog! Pip is currently pregnant herself and due in November. We wish you all the very best for the remainder of your pregnancy Pip and the arrival of your new bubba! ~ alisha & anna

When destiny takes hold of your child and shouts “Enjoy the Ride!!”

I grew up around a lot of pushy stage Mums. Luckily I didn’t have one, and I’m determined not to be one! So much so I have held my daughter who is now 5, back from classes or specialist lessons, making a rule with myself that I would wait till she starts school. I grew up in the ‘theatre’. I danced, sang and acted my way through my childhood and teenage years, with a little bit of piano on the side.  I have wonderful memories of my weekends treading the boards (while poor dad sat out in the car waiting).  Like many young girls, this very early became my thing. I knew my whole life what I liked and what I wanted to be. I…

Grace Kelly: 30 years since her tragic death

It’s 30 years this week since Grace Kelly tragically died in a car accident.  I blogged about my small but significant crush on her earlier this year, so I thought I would share it again today for those who may have missed it, along with this gorgeous pic I only recently found with her son Albert II. She was known to be an exceptionally dedicated mother. Enjoy! x anna ______________________________________ I adore Grace Kelly… image via Harper’s Bazaar I don’t know how or when it started – I can’t remember the first time I saw her but I suspect it had something to do with driving our mother crazy and her needing some quiet time.  She probably plonked my sisters and I in front of…

Holiday-induced shopping: The credit-card coma. The regrets. The unworn souvenirs.

So I am back from holidays in the States and (as all Australian’s who have done the LA flight + NYC connection will appreciate) I’m struggling with a little jet-lag. I can now finally relate to all those mothers out there who are up to their children regularly throughout the night – I’ve been sitting bleary eyed in the cold dark quiet of the house wondering if I should buy an Ab-Circle Pro. It really does seem like quite a good deal? We had a great trip but it seems I may have disappointed many of my friends (and sisters) on my lack of shopping acquisitions. To be fair, I did have grand plans of hitting the pavements of Manhattan with the determination of an…

The day I was proposed to

It’s with heaps and heaps of girly excitement I tell you the love of my life has proposed to me! It has been a crazy few weeks and I feel a little overwhelmed… but I am sure it will all sink in eventually! Part of the reason I have been so busy is that I had to get sorella & me organized so I could get away for a 3 week working-holiday with my fella (J1) to the USA. He had a conference to go to so I thought I’d tag along, and include a week or so break together at the end (one of the benefits of having your own online business is that you can work, if well-organised, from practically anywhere!…That, and the…

Australian fashion is loaded with toxic chemicals – Organic & Natural fibres are the way to go, says Choice

It’s no surprise for us here at sorella & me to read a report this week by independent consumer watchdog Choice on the toxic chemicals found in Australian clothing and the damage they are doing to our health as well as our environment. In Choice’s report, Andreas Schimkus, a Senior Advisor from the Council of Textile and Fashion Industries of Australia (TCFA) states: “The most dangerous way for a toxin to enter the body is not through the digestive system, but through the skin“ Therefore, any garment in contact with the skin can easily transfer the toxic chemicals used in its manufacture and finishing through to the individual. Further, and perhaps even more alarming, Schimkus says: “Products that are made in China for the Australian…

New designs coming soon from sorella & me maternity sleepwear

Just a brief post today because alisha & I are up to our eyeballs in fabric samples, lace, Pantone colour cards and lots of sketches! After an incredible response to our launch collection, alisha and I are really excited to be back in design phase – Yep! We are in the midst of adding a few new swanky pieces to the collection. Yay! We have had an incredible start to life with our new ‘baby’ – with the sleepless nights and teething problems to boot! But the smiles she brings us every single day makes all the hard work worth it! (sound familiar mummas out there??)

Vintage finds & the stories they tell

I have already confessed my love of 1950s films to the sorella-hood (see here for a re-cap). So it probably won’t shock you that I’m a sucker for a cute antique shop – I just love looking (and sometimes laughing) at all the amazing things. I can waste some serious hours and fortunately for me, if I holler out to J1 to “Pull over!” he knows I’m serious and is as equally keen to jump out of the car and hunt for treasures.

Casually Cool Mums & Beautiful Baby Bumps: Maternity & Mummy chic we can all achieve!

The last 12 months has seen some of the biggest celebrities either give birth, adopt, or fall pregnant. For today’s post we thought a little fashion drool-fest was in order to inspire the maternity wardrobe for some of our sorellas who are expecting, and for the new mummies out there in the playgrounds or off to school pick up!! I had prepared myself to see over-styled, unachievable ensembles, however I was relieved to instead find everyday casual looks that are absolutely attainable for all of us lacking a full-time stylist! Yep – maternity and mummy-chic is about a throw-over pretty print dress, practical jeans so you can pick your child up from the sand-pit, flats or trainers to get you to the school gate on…

Grace Kelly: Princess, Mother, Actress, Style icon. Could she have been any more fabulous?

Grace Kelly for Life Magazine

I adore Grace Kelly… I don’t know how or when it started – I can’t remember the first time I saw her but I suspect it had something to do with driving our mother crazy and her needing some quiet time. She probably plonked my sisters and I in front of Bill Collins’ Midday Movie and perhaps that particular day it happened to be the 1956 film High Society. It would very quickly become my all-time favorite movie, and Grace Kelly, my favourite ‘pretty lady from the movies’.

Getting snap happy

Chris Garbacz Photography sorella & me

My husband and I were cleaning out the garage on the weekend and we found an underwater camera from our honeymoon with film that had never been processed. It’s been sitting in a box for 6 years! We must have bought one for our day snorkeling – I just can’t wait to see what is on it…. Photography these days has become pretty instantaneous. Gone are the days of the good old Kodak 24 Film treating every single exposure like a thread of saffron – too expensive to waste willy nilly – so you save them up and pray the lighting was good enough for that all important moment you were trying to capture. When you do finally get to the end of the film,…
