Everything a first-time mum-to-be needs to know….

There’s a reason we don’t often do Pregnancy & Baby Expos with our maternity collection by sorella organics. They are quite simply too overwhelming, too busy, too noisy, and (in my opinion) consist of just an unbearable amount of information for any one person to take in. With so many brands, in one HUGE venue, it must be so hard to make choices and decisions of what’s best for mum and her family? In fact, I wonder if some mums come out MORE confused than she was when she went in?!! There’s only one Pregnancy Event we are currently a part of, and the reason is simple – it’s a small, beautiful, stress-free event – full of great information and advice so first-time mums don’t have to spend their entire pregnancy…

If you can’t cope with my unhelpful-help, perhaps buy a headscarf?

You’ve read them too right? Those blog posts/articles/rants that do the rounds from someone on their high horse with their List of Things You Should Not Say To Them When They are in X Situation? I hate those lists.  25 things not to say to a woman who is struggling to fall pregnant 174 things not to say to a woman over 30 going through a break up 4062798 things not to say to someone with depression I really really hate those lists. If we all get around stifled with fear for saying the wrong thing, that means nothing will be said at all. And if nothing is said it all, surely we’d end up wondering why the bloody-hell no one cares? I get it. Sometimes when you are…

A lifetime supply of pjs? Who would say no to that!

Anna & Alisha

You may have noticed I’ve been MIA from the sorella-hood since Christmas. Sorry. And thank you to those people who lovingly asked “Where have you been?! When’s your next post?!” Delightful to know you enjoy catching up with us each week in our random silliness! My hiatus from writing probably stemmed from the start of summer (sun, beach, cocktails). I think I must have embraced the week off at Chrissy a little more than I realised. Time to take a little breath. Some stillness. A few stunning sunrises… Resting was fabulous. {If you are a regular in the ‘hood you’ll know I managed to get a little burnt out last year… a follow up post on how I managed getting myself out of that mess is to…

You want it? You got it.

While we are still only a baby of a label finding our feet, those that have found us have been devoted since their first restful night sleep in our soft organic Pjs. And they keep coming back for more. And it’s these dedicated fans that shaped our plans this year, and will continue to do so into the future. We have already managed to fulfill one big fan-based request – to launch a mens line. So it is with a big smile and a stack of excitement that we announce the launch of the 2nd big request from our awesome customers this year….The request was clear: “WE WANT IT IN BLACK” So it’s with much pleasure we can now offer all your favourite pieces in…

Capturing the love of a mother with her newborn child

My husband bought LittleOne baby magazine for me when I was pregnant years ago.  I hadn’t seen the magazine before and knew straight away there was going to be something special inside the glossy pages! It has remained as one of my favorites.  I especially love the features they do on children’s bedrooms titled “Baby’s Space’. The current issue of LittleOne baby is no exception and has a beautiful feature on new mums- real mums in the hospital just days after giving birth. Amy Doak mentions in her Publisher’s letter that there is nothing quite like “the look of love on a new mother’s face” (LittleOne baby Issue 10 p8). Photographer Kate Monotti has certainly captured this in the recent shoot. And we were thrilled…

Moving forward following miscarriage

Today on the blog, a very courageous woman shares her deepest sadness. We thank Alli from Alli & Genine for allowing us to share her story with the sorella-hood and also thank her for her being so brave in this mostly taboo subject of miscarriage. We hope her experience provides comfort to those women in the sorella-hood community who have suffered a miscarriage and also provide a little insight for those of you who know a beautiful woman who has endured a similar loss. We send positive energy to Alli, and to you all with the hope that by sharing her heart-felt words with you today, strength is found in moving forward, and as Alli herself expressed – “I want other women out there to feel…

Happy Father’s Day! Our top 5 list of Cool Celebrity Dads

Since it’s Father’s Day this Sunday, we are having a “Dad-Fest” all week in the sorella-hood! Today’s post is our Top 5 list of Cool Celebrity Dads who love to shout to the world “I’m a Dad and I’m Proud!”….. They also seem to be able to do this while looking mighty handsome at the same time. Could this be because they don’t actually do a lot of ‘dad stuff’ and that leaves them more time to get to the gym? If such is the case, perhaps this list should be renamed “Cool Celebrity Men who also just happen to be Dads”? We won’t judge, we will just look. 1. Hugh Jackman Definitely no.1 on our list as there is actually no question (as suggested…

A feeling in my loins…

As many of you know, I am currently at the very start of planning my wedding. I am completely overwhelmed, terrified, nauseated, and literally sleepless with all the options, costs and ways it could all go very very wrong. To make matters worse, while I am shortlisting venues and finalising budgets, I have had every bride there has even been tell me “Oh it’s all so fabulous! I wish I was planning my wedding day again! It’s the BEST!” Which does nothing except make me feel like I am missing something. Didn’t anyone else feel the pain of wedding-planning-crazy-land? Interestingly, as I grapple with the “is it all really worth it – why can’t I just elope” question, it seems one mother in the sorella-hood…

The sorella-hood’s top 10 essential items to pack in your hospital bag – for MUMS!

It’s fair to say an expectant Mary Poppins would be well prepared for her pending hospital visit, but what about the rest of us that aren’t lucky enough to have bottomless luggage? There are many ‘What to pack for your hospital bag’ lists out there, so the difference with the sorella & me list? Well, it is compiled by our sorella-hood readers – AND their suggestions focus on Mum’s needs only! (A big thank you to all those who contributed!) So here we go – the Top 10 essential items to pack in your hospital bag – for MUMS! 1. Comfy Sleepwear (that doubles as day-wear!)  You have to be comfortable, but you don’t want to be in clothes that will have you diving under…

The Battle of the Boob

It’s the final day of World Breastfeeding Week (1-7th August) – a really important world-wide awareness campaign on all aspects of breastfeeding. Although I’m yet to experience the lows and highs of breastfeeding (the lowest I’m guessing being the actual lowest point the breast can get post-breastfeeding); I have had many friends go through this incredibly anatomically intricate, yet completely natural process to have a little insight into it. Plus given Alisha and I design maternity clothes to make breastfeeding comfortable and easier for a living, it’s pretty important I know what I am talking about!! My breastfeeding summary: breastfeeding can be exhausting, difficult, sometimes impossible, and often just a big pain in the bust. It can be a stressful battle of the boob. It…

This organic T-shirt comes with a WARNING: You won’t want to take it off!

Just a little call out today to let you know about our promotion for this week only: the sorella & me organic modern t is on sale for $29 (rrp $54.95). Haven’t heard the buzz about the super soft T-shirt? Well…this is no ordinary t! Originally designed for women who were resorting to wearing their hubby’s oversized & ugly T-shirts to get comfy during pregnancy, this t has become a firm favourite for both pregnant and non-pregnant women who love a t, but love a cute & comfy t even more. A great basic for your everyday wardrobe – wear with jeans, leggings, or to bed with your favourite pj short or pants (and it’s long enough so you can get away with just knickers!)….

Australian fashion is loaded with toxic chemicals – Organic & Natural fibres are the way to go, says Choice

It’s no surprise for us here at sorella & me to read a report this week by independent consumer watchdog Choice on the toxic chemicals found in Australian clothing and the damage they are doing to our health as well as our environment. In Choice’s report, Andreas Schimkus, a Senior Advisor from the Council of Textile and Fashion Industries of Australia (TCFA) states: “The most dangerous way for a toxin to enter the body is not through the digestive system, but through the skin“ Therefore, any garment in contact with the skin can easily transfer the toxic chemicals used in its manufacture and finishing through to the individual. Further, and perhaps even more alarming, Schimkus says: “Products that are made in China for the Australian…

Casually Cool Mums & Beautiful Baby Bumps: Maternity & Mummy chic we can all achieve!

The last 12 months has seen some of the biggest celebrities either give birth, adopt, or fall pregnant. For today’s post we thought a little fashion drool-fest was in order to inspire the maternity wardrobe for some of our sorellas who are expecting, and for the new mummies out there in the playgrounds or off to school pick up!! I had prepared myself to see over-styled, unachievable ensembles, however I was relieved to instead find everyday casual looks that are absolutely attainable for all of us lacking a full-time stylist! Yep – maternity and mummy-chic is about a throw-over pretty print dress, practical jeans so you can pick your child up from the sand-pit, flats or trainers to get you to the school gate on…

How a Midwife can help you during pregnancy, labour and birth, and the postpartum period at home

The term midwife is derived from Middle English: mid = “with” and Old English: wif = “woman” Midwifery is a health care profession in which providers offer care to childbearing women during their pregnancy, labour and birth, and during the postpartum period.  They also care for the newborn through to six weeks of age, including assisting with breastfeeding (Midwives Australia).  As the International Day of the Midwife is 5th May 2012 we thought it might be timely to learn a little more about the amazing work Midwives undertake. Did you have a Midwife? It was something I didn’t consider during my first pregnancy but I was so grateful for the support and care I received by the Midwives in the hospital clinic during my pregnancy…

Getting snap happy

Chris Garbacz Photography sorella & me

My husband and I were cleaning out the garage on the weekend and we found an underwater camera from our honeymoon with film that had never been processed. It’s been sitting in a box for 6 years! We must have bought one for our day snorkeling – I just can’t wait to see what is on it…. Photography these days has become pretty instantaneous. Gone are the days of the good old Kodak 24 Film treating every single exposure like a thread of saffron – too expensive to waste willy nilly – so you save them up and pray the lighting was good enough for that all important moment you were trying to capture. When you do finally get to the end of the film,…

How will my body change with pregnancy and birth?

Today Anna contemplates (and is terrified of) the changing body she is told to expect following pregnancy and childbirth. Like many women, I have spent a lot of my life begrudging my body.  At the ripe old age of 33, I still don’t know why we do it – it’s exhausting to say the least.  I seriously waste so much time with my head stuck in the back of my wardrobe trying to find something to wear when there is simply nothing to wear. It’s ridiculous. I could spend that time doing so many more fabulous things – like drinking French Martinis. Or getting massages. I remember being as young as 9 years old and comparing my features to my best friend. Why did her…

Our little miracle

Today is National Premmie’s Day. We are so fortunate to have our friend Aleisha share her son Charlie’s story and his fight for life, born at just 28 weeks. Looking at my 5 year old boy, you would never have known he was born at 28 weeks, 12 weeks early and weighing 860 grams.  He came into the world on a Monday morning with the help of an extremely large team of Doctors and Nurses, and was immediately whisked away into the neonatal intensive care unit (NICU), where he would spend the first 50 days of his life.  It was 7 days before I was able to hold him for the first time.

Andrea’s Pregnancy Video Diary – Week 19

Four weeks on from her announcement that she is pregnant, Andrea shares her latest video diary with the sorella-hood. If you missed her first diary entry, you can check it out here. Now at 19 weeks, Andrea has the choice of finding out her baby’s gender. Making this decision has become a little more difficult due to the vested interests of her two young children who seem to have their own views on sibling responsibilities when the baby arrives as well as gender preference (so cute!). I can certainly remember the day my younger sister was born – I cried, and cried and cried. I was so sure she was going to be a boy! Find out what Andrea decides to do…

Andrea’s Pregnancy Video Diary

Introducing the lovely Andrea, who recently found out she is pregnant with her 3rd bubba – congrats Andrea!   Andrea’s very kindly agreed to share the adventures of her pregnancy with the sorella-hood through her video diaries. Each month we will check in to see how she is progressing, how she is feeling, and how her two little ones are preparing for the arrival of their baby brother or sister. This week, Andrea has just made the 12 week mark. She tells us about finally fessing up to her friends, the anxiety of telling her boss of her news, and why she has had to open an eBay account!
