My life mission: To rid the world of man’s ugly, pilly, baggy track pants and thigh-high polyester shorts

Fathers Day Gift - owens short in evening sky

It’s fathers day in little over 8 days in Australia. Time to celebrate the men in our life. And if your dad is anything like mine (sensitive, grumpy, a little needy, a lot argumentative, and always right…. But also generous, kind-hearted, supportive, totally lovable, and worth enduring the annoying first listed traits) – then might I suggest you avoid risking the ordinary this fathers day? The ordinary being, an ordinary blah blah father’s day gift. My dad always says he doesn’t want anything. But I’ve never seen him turn down a box of Darrell Lea Chocolates come the big day (He has to rely getting those from one of my sisters’ these days though as there are questions whether they ethically source their cacao…. Poor dad). So this year…

3 things no.4! || nina, sisters & puppies

Time for another edition of 3 things! (I can just FEEL your utter excitement. Yes. Read on my friend). 3 things I learnt/realised/randomly thought about this week || no.4  #1 That Offspring is over. For good. (Apparently) Nina makes me feel “normal”. If this is the end, who is going to make me feel normal now? Are you sad too? Group hug?   #2 I found the best birthday card

The case of the mysteriously appearing Nappies

Regulars to the sorella-hood will know that I recently moved house (- and survived, although this mid-move pic may lead you to believe otherwise): Moving house provides the opportunity for discovery: That earring you lost 2 years ago The spare car key (you blamed your husband for losing) in the pocket of the shorts you wore all summer The receipts you desperately needed for last years tax return And then there are the discoveries of other things. Things that you had no idea were residing in your house in the first place. Here’s an example: Three quarters of a pack of boys nappies There’s nothing extraordinary about these nappies. They are just your regular run of the mill disposable nappies. The extraordinary part is that I don’t know…

sorella sale time!

If you are a sorella-devotee you will note we don’t have sales very often. But it’s the ‘end of financial year’ here in Australia, and with that it means: tax time. And with tax time comes stocktake. And with stocktake comes sitting on the floor for countless hours, days even, counting lots and lots of PJs. You will probably know from my whingeing that I moved house this past week. I survived by the way – but it’s not yet the end. There’s a mountain of boxes still around me and I have been forced to create a very strategic ‘valley’ throughout the house to enable me to get to the most important places one needs – the fridge and the bed. I have even bribed the delivery guy…

3 things no.2! || boobies, coconuts, birth

Did you like our first 3 things? Well then let’s not stop now. Here’s edition no.2! 3 things I learnt/realised/randomly thought about this week || no.2 #1 LITTLE KIDS ARE funny HILARIOUS I spent the weekend on the Sunshine Coast (Queensland) visiting my 3 nieces and nephew and apart from an education in Frozen, I came away with some gold-nugget quotes that are still making me laugh. This is perhaps my favourite – from my 4 year-old nephew who I guess has had a lesson or two at Kindy on God recently: “God is in your heart. Your heart is in the middle of your boobies”  Fair enough. #2 I WISH I INVESTED IN A COCONUT TREE PLANTATION 10 YEARS AGO Actually, also a Chia Seed farm, Quinoa farm, Cacao farm……

You want it? You got it.

While we are still only a baby of a label finding our feet, those that have found us have been devoted since their first restful night sleep in our soft organic Pjs. And they keep coming back for more. And it’s these dedicated fans that shaped our plans this year, and will continue to do so into the future. We have already managed to fulfill one big fan-based request – to launch a mens line. So it is with a big smile and a stack of excitement that we announce the launch of the 2nd big request from our awesome customers this year….The request was clear: “WE WANT IT IN BLACK” So it’s with much pleasure we can now offer all your favourite pieces in…

I confess. I find it hard to get completely nude.

It’s easy to feel overwhelmed when you walk into the ground floors of major department stores, don’t you think? Dazzling lights. Floor to ceiling images of photoshopped glamazons with ethereal skin staring with judgement at your dull epidermis. Their faces represent the health I crave. I want that frigging glow dammit. So you find yourself pulled into the beauty vortex, the assistant with her hands inappropriately all over your face.  Your phobia of abused personal space is pushed to its limits. She’s talking AT you as if you are some sort of recluse given your lack of knowledge on the importance of niacinamide and hyaluronic acid. And you leave, feeling slightly inadequate and definitely overwhelmed, but somewhat hopeful armed with a stash of samples containing…

sneaky-peek behind the scenes! 2013 sorella & me photoshoot

It’s so exciting for us to be so close to launching a few new pieces to our much-loved sorella & me collection. After the success of the new men’s collection, we are sure you will love these new women’s and maternity pieces just as much! To keep you salivating until they launch later this month, we’ve put together a little behind the scenes video of the shoot which we held on the Sunshine Coast. You might spot a few of these new pieces! A big thanks to the very talented Harry Mark for putting the video together for us!

New styles, photoshoots, and awards!

Hard to believe we are through half of another year isn’t it? Time seems to be flying by, and life with sorella & me has been a big part of that. We have been super busy and have so many exciting things to share with you in the coming months – the first of which is our photoshoot next Friday…. if you think this might indicate we are adding new pieces to the current collection, you’d be right! Stay tuned for some behind the scenes photos next week for your first look of what’s coming!

Think. Eat. Save.

It’s World Environment Day! Celebrated every year on June 5th, World Environment Day is a campaign run under the United Nations Environment Program (UNEP) aiming to raise awareness and bring about positive environmental action. This year, the campaign’s theme is Think. Eat. Save – which encourages us to be more aware of our food choices, and the carbon footprint we are creating through such choices and waste. The UNEP provides a couple of great ideas to easily get started: “Purposefully select foods that have less of an environmental impact, such as organic foods that do not use chemicals in the production process. Choosing to buy locally can also mean that foods are not flown halfway across the world and therefore limit emissions.”    We all…

Get your velvet on – beetroot style!

Did you see Alisha’s post on the sorella & me facebook page yesterday in all its sugary goodness? Right at 3pm – in all our dropped blood-sugar states – she thought she’d share a photo of a delicious cupcake. What a bi-atch. In my opinion, not only was it rude because it was at a time when a cup cake would have gone down quite nicely (I am cranky when I am hungry), but also rude because there are many of us who are trying really really hard to reduce sugar in our diets – and succeeding or not, we don’t need a reminder of what we are missing out on! So I searched high and low for an option that would tick the sugar free…

Capturing the love of a mother with her newborn child

My husband bought LittleOne baby magazine for me when I was pregnant years ago.  I hadn’t seen the magazine before and knew straight away there was going to be something special inside the glossy pages! It has remained as one of my favorites.  I especially love the features they do on children’s bedrooms titled “Baby’s Space’. The current issue of LittleOne baby is no exception and has a beautiful feature on new mums- real mums in the hospital just days after giving birth. Amy Doak mentions in her Publisher’s letter that there is nothing quite like “the look of love on a new mother’s face” (LittleOne baby Issue 10 p8). Photographer Kate Monotti has certainly captured this in the recent shoot. And we were thrilled…

My top 5 (okay, 6) brands to celebrate Fairtrade Fortnight!

It’s Fairtrade Fortnight! This a great opportunity for us to understand how making more informed choices on the products we buy can have a huge impact on the lives of those less fortunate. Fairtrade is described by the Fairtrade Association of Australia & NZ (an arm of Fairtrade International) as: Better prices, decent working conditions, local sustainability, and fair terms of trade for farmers and workers in the developing world. By requiring companies to pay sustainable prices, Fairtrade addresses the injustices of conventional trade, which traditionally discriminates against the poorest, weakest producers. It enables them to improve their position and have more control over their lives. Fairtrade International have developed a strict global certification process to allow consumers greater confidence when buying everyday products that…

Giving to our Mothers on Mother’s Day

Mother’s Day is approaching and my daughter who is 5 is going to make sure it is a BIG event!  She has been talking about it for weeks – and is so excited! She keeps hinting at what she has been doing at school for me and today I sent her to school with an envelope with a few coins for the mother’s day stall. The carnation is of course the traditional gift/symbol for mother’s day. Anna Jarvis sent 500 of these beautiful flowers to a church service in the U.S in 1908 to be handed out to mothers. The carnation represents all things sweet, innocent, pure and essentially, love.  And so the tradition of gift giving for mothers began. My mum always said no…

Always the best Mother’s Day Gift

Every woman will tell you a new pair of Pjs, a sleep in, and perhaps a meal cooked by someone else, all make the perfect gifts for Mother’s Day. Lucky for you we can help with one of those things on her list – sorella & me’s best-selling sleep & lounge pant is back in stock just in time for the Aussie winter and also just in time for Mother’s Day!! You can’t go wrong with soft organic cotton (fair trade too of course), lace trim detail, and comfy drawstring waist. This pant also comes in a rollover band waist for those who like a loser fit or are expecting.  Available in 2 colours – evening sky and pink blush. Unsure about size or colour?…

Love Peppermint!!!

We were thrilled the sorella & me sleepshirt was included in Peppermint magazine’s Fashion Safari feature for their beautiful Autumn edition! Peppermint “is the green fashion and lifestyle magazine, celebrating eco and ethical style with a fun, fresh, intelligent and positive spin. It was created for the rapidly growing number of consumers who appreciate good design, fashion and creativity, but also care about social and environmental issues and where their clothing comes from.” The perfect place for sorella & me, right? The location of the shoot was the beautiful grounds at Werribee Open Range Zoo in Victoria (which by the way is just 30 minutes from Melbourne and a great place to visit with the kids when you are in town!). Just some of the…

Beware of the fiery Dragon in her make-shift cyclone bunker. She will eat you up and spit you out if you don’t put that camera away.

WARNING: today is a rant-fest. It’s no secret that we are paying too much for the same product a US or UK shopper can purchase it for.  Regardless of its country of origin, they can have the same item significantly cheaper than we can in Australia.  Some products I have come across are somehow miraculously 70% more expensive as soon as they land on our shores and into our shops. And that, to me, stinks. In case you weren’t aware, we offer the sorella & me women’s and maternity collection to anyone in the world for the same price an Australian pays for it. Why? Because why should an international customer pay more than an Australian customer? They shouldn’t. Why should they pay less than…

To dummy or not to dummy? When do WE say good-bye to the comforter?!

Early when I was in the ‘newborn haze’ I posted on Facebook “to dummy or not to dummy?”, to get advice from friends about whether I should give my baby one.  The response was mixed.  I decided to give him one. Would I give him a dummy again? Yes. My daughter didn’t have one (which is why I went searching for opinion), but the dummy was the only thing that gave me a break from breastfeeding my very thirsty son and allowing my body the time it needed to produce more milk.  It was a lifesaver in the car and he was a great sleeper with our strict rule that dummy was only for sleep time, so in the cot and in the car etc.  …

What did you miss in 2012?

Welcome back to the sorella-hood for 2013! We hope you had a wonderful time over Christmas with your family and set for another fantastic year! As parents start to get the back-to-school preparations started, and men and women over the country groan their way back to work (dreaming of any sort of opportunity to be able to quit work and financially fund a permanent residence at the beach), Alisha & I are so excited to be reaching sorella & me‘s first birthday later this month, and can’t wait to see  where this year will take us (it’s going to be hard to top an amazing 2012!). Aside from a overwhelming love of our sleepwear collection, a very surprising aspect of sorella & me last year…

40 ways out of trouble with Fashionista’s Australia

We got lots of great feedback (and sighs of relief) when we posted last weeks round up of the best Christmas gift guides. But there has been one more guide pop up this week we just have to share because a) we know you will love it, b) these girls know what they are talking about when it comes to beautiful things, and c) we are certain it will save you those likely headaches over the next 5 days trying to figure out what your sister really needs as opposed to what she is telling you she wants…. Emily Power and Antonia Acott are Fashionista’s Australia (a must read site to subscribe to by the way!) and they have put together an (aptly named) Last Minute…

No one likes a dud Christmas present.

4 years ago my friend woke up on Christmas morning to a glistening diamond and a proposal for marriage.  By wake up to – I literally mean poked and prodded at the crack of dawn to a handy-cam in her face and before she had time to wipe the sleep from her eyes, her besotted boyfriend was on one knee asking for her hand. (Asking if she wanted time to wake up first prior to asking her to be his wife probably would have been helpful, but he was excited, and bless him he just couldn’t wait). She said yes, of course. What a happy Christmas…. But this poor guy is going to find it hard to top that gift for sure! There are just…

This isn’t another Melbourne Cup fashion report

Melbourne Cup Fever. I have it. But not in the way you’d expect. Fashion I love. But a talent for race day appropriate frocks and fascinators – I do not. Race day to me is (shockingly) about the horses. The track report, the barrier draw, the recent form. Like a nerd who lines up at the Apple store to get the latest iphone the night before it’s released, I love the lead up to the final field sections, the pre-cup predictions, the race day form guide, and of course the actions that follow – taking a punt.

Kids in the Kitchen: Chewy Cornflake Slice

There’s nothing new about this slice but it’s such a winner for busy Mums on the go! Plus, it’s a brilliant recipe for kids who love ‘helping’ in the kitchen. My daughter loves making this because apart from the chopping and chocolate melting, she can do most herself. Her favourite step in her words: “mixing the gooey and chewy part!” As long as you have the flour, cornflakes and the condensed milk the rest you can substitute from your pantry with any dried fruit or nuts, coconut is great, dried apricots and even oats – whatever your kids love!  We usually to make a different version each time. CHEWY CORNFLAKE SLICE INGREDIENTS: 3 cups corn flakes ¼ cup organic sultanas ¼ cup sweetened dried cranberries…

It’s a very pink day today. And it’s fabulous!

Today is ‘Pink Day’ at my “other job” when not working on sorella & me…as secondary school teacher! Seeing 14-year-old boys with balloons for breasts and wearing pink bras, I’ll admit, makes me feel a little uneasy (!)… But their dress-ups and spirit is heart-warming and for a great cause – we are fundraising for Breast Cancer research as part of Breast Cancer Awareness Month. And today, I remember my beautiful Aunty who lost her young life to Breast Cancer.

It’s time to give your ‘Mum Uniform’ a comfortable but stylish overhaul

Sitting at the Brisbane airport recently waiting for a flight, I (for a change) was early and this gave me plenty of time to ‘people watch’. Boy there are some colourful characters in the world! It instantly became a reminder for me not to get caught up in the safe world of “mummy fashion”.  You know the style – the good old comfy uniform of ballet flats, slouchy tee, skinny jeans and swipe of lip gloss. It always looks good, but let’s face it, it’s certainly “safe”. There’s nothing like sitting in an airport and a trip to the big smoke to remind us folk from smaller, often more relaxed and casual pastures, that just because you’re 30 plus (plus a bit more!) and a…

A happy marriage. What’s the magic formula?

Our parents are celebrating their 40th wedding anniversary this week. When you stop to think about it, it’s a big achievement. Massive. Just think, 40 years with that one person. My mum married my father as a sweet 21 year old – so she has spent two-thirds of her life with him. She wouldn’t know a day without him, and he without her. And let’s face it. It’s especially awe-inspiring with a current divorce rate of 2.3 divorces per 1,000 population (2010 figures from the Australian Bureau of Statistics). That’s 50,200 divorces. That’s 100,400 unhappy people (or happy people, depending on how you look at it). That’s 1 in 217 Australians getting divorced every year!

Chocolate Chia Seed Cake

After a really random connection with foodie blogging team the The Nutrition Guru & The Chef ….{Tara recognised her hubby – The Chef part of the duo – in our photo of the Wasabi team at the Noosa International Food & Wine festival}…. we have been avid fans of their blog and Tara’s hilarious antics – cruise their facebook page for many hilarious examples!. Recently on the blog, Tara shared a recipe (and some of her own cute pics) from Tania Hubbard’s gorgeous cookbook “Gluten Free…Grain Free…Food We Love” for a Chocolate Chia Cake – and I knew I just had to try it. It was, as predicted (and as demonstrated by ‘The Chef’ apparently demolishing the entire cake in one sitting) – delicious. So…

sorella & me at the ProBlogger Training Event 2012

If you’ve kept an eye on the sorella & me facebook page over the last few days you would have seen that Anna and I were fortunate to spend two days at the ProBlogger Training Event in Melbourne – getting our bloggie on!! The event brings 300 bloggers of all levels together to learn and network. Anna and I really enjoy writing the sorella-hood blog and connecting with you all here, sharing our observations on ‘life’, and hopefully providing you a place to have a laugh (at our expense) or learn something new.  We were grateful for the opportunity to find out how do this better by attending the ProBlogger training – it was such a treat to take some time out to listen and…

We received a really lovely review from Melbourne Blogger Pip Mooney of The Daily Wipe that we thought we’d share today. Pip blogs about parenting, fashion, beauty, and food – and everything in between! Who is the latest celeb to fall pregs, or just gave birth? You’ll hear it first from Pip! Which designer label is set to release a new children’s line? Pip will know about it…. We love her blog! Pip is currently pregnant herself and due in November. We wish you all the very best for the remainder of your pregnancy Pip and the arrival of your new bubba! ~ alisha & anna

As Dory says, “Just keep swimming! Just keep swimming!”

As some of you may know, Alisha and I live in opposite ends of the country. Alisha on the Sunshine Coast, and me in Melbourne. So it’s been great to have her visit this week with her two little ones – mostly for work on sorella & me’s current production, but also to have some fun! First stop was the Melbourne Aquarium. Situated right in the middle of the CBD opposite Southbank, the Aquarium is a great 2 hour escape from the hustle of the city and a fantastic place for your children to explore and learn about the underwater world. The King & Gentoo Penguin enclosure was pretty amazing. I’ve always been a little unsure about keeping animals in areas distinctly more artificial than…

Celebrating Baby’s 1st Birthday!

It’s Baby M’s 1st Birthday today! The gorgeous cherub we were lucky to have in our photoshoot last year is Baby M. She was just 2 weeks old at the time and it was her first big outing with mum. We loved having her there for the afternoon – the whole atmosphere of the shoot changed as soon as she arrived. What was a mid-afternoon slump in energy after an action packed 6 hours of shooting, quickly changed pace with the arrival of Baby M still with her yummy new baby smell – there is nothing quite as special as a new baby!

Grace Kelly: 30 years since her tragic death

It’s 30 years this week since Grace Kelly tragically died in a car accident.  I blogged about my small but significant crush on her earlier this year, so I thought I would share it again today for those who may have missed it, along with this gorgeous pic I only recently found with her son Albert II. She was known to be an exceptionally dedicated mother. Enjoy! x anna ______________________________________ I adore Grace Kelly… image via Harper’s Bazaar I don’t know how or when it started – I can’t remember the first time I saw her but I suspect it had something to do with driving our mother crazy and her needing some quiet time.  She probably plonked my sisters and I in front of…

A feeling in my loins…

As many of you know, I am currently at the very start of planning my wedding. I am completely overwhelmed, terrified, nauseated, and literally sleepless with all the options, costs and ways it could all go very very wrong. To make matters worse, while I am shortlisting venues and finalising budgets, I have had every bride there has even been tell me “Oh it’s all so fabulous! I wish I was planning my wedding day again! It’s the BEST!” Which does nothing except make me feel like I am missing something. Didn’t anyone else feel the pain of wedding-planning-crazy-land? Interestingly, as I grapple with the “is it all really worth it – why can’t I just elope” question, it seems one mother in the sorella-hood…

The Battle of the Boob

It’s the final day of World Breastfeeding Week (1-7th August) – a really important world-wide awareness campaign on all aspects of breastfeeding. Although I’m yet to experience the lows and highs of breastfeeding (the lowest I’m guessing being the actual lowest point the breast can get post-breastfeeding); I have had many friends go through this incredibly anatomically intricate, yet completely natural process to have a little insight into it. Plus given Alisha and I design maternity clothes to make breastfeeding comfortable and easier for a living, it’s pretty important I know what I am talking about!! My breastfeeding summary: breastfeeding can be exhausting, difficult, sometimes impossible, and often just a big pain in the bust. It can be a stressful battle of the boob. It…
