Our view from the 2012 L’Oreal Melbourne Fashion Festival

LMFF Scanlan & Theodore

sorella & me was lucky enough to attend the Opening Event of the 2012 L’Oreal Melbourne Fashion Festival (LMFF). The plan was to post a few pics on our Facebook page, but with so many delightful bits and pieces, we felt a post was a more respectable dedication to the incredible Aussie designers who featured.

Now I’m not skilled with an iphone at the best of times – and I’m pretty sure Steve Jobs didn’t have the bright lights of a runway in mind when he designed it – so apologies for the low quality in sound, vision and position from the bleachers. It had NOTHING to do with the fact that I had enjoyed a couple of wines prior to the show. There are some great videos posted by the LMFF crew on YouTube so head to their channel to get a closer squizz at the gorgeous pieces from the Opening Event and other runway shows from the festival.

The show kicked off with a selection of goodies from David Jones.  There was a flurry of designer fabric as the models whizzed past one after the other. It was like being a kid in a candy store – so much to see, so little time, and we wanted one of everything! (Warning – turn your sound down if you are at work!)

Label icons including Scanlan & Theodore, Thurley, Alex Perry, Camilla & Marc, Megan Park, Josh Goot and Collette Dinnigan followed – each as impressive as the one before. And although we are headed down the path to winter, there was still so much colour featured which we were relieved to see.  I don’t know about you but I have only JUST convinced my body to move from enjoying the comforts of so much black to last years Sping/Summer colour trends.

Although speaking of embracing black, I was really excited about Dita Von Teese and her ‘Muse’ collection.  I’m simply fascinated by this woman and her achievements in both business and fashion.

Her approach for Muse? Think 1950’s glamour with that iconic vintage twist Von Teese is now well know for. I was devastated to realise I missed her ‘Von Follies’ lingerie collection showing last Saturday night.  BUT apparently the collection is bound for Target stores! (I’ll bet $10 there isn’t a g-string in sight, right ladies?)

Here is Von Teese’s ‘Muse’ collection, followed by the always impressive Trelise Cooper (or you can catch a better view of ‘Muse’ here). I think know I want the long-sleeved ‘Second Look’ dress:

Ok, now moving back to Aussie territory and among others we had Alannah Hill, Lee Matthews, Lisa Ho, Easton Pearson, Akira & our organic-cotton-loving friends Bassike.

What really caught my eye though was  Lover. How they can make something so structured also look so feminine (love lace!) as well as comfortable I don’t know, but I gushed over every bit of it and went straight to their website when I got home to drool over the entire collection.

Samantha Harris was modelling the most gorgeous aqua blue coat, with stunning lace skirt (or it could have been a frock). You can see it (albeit a bit blurry) below – or check out this clip for a close up look of all pieces:

And that brings us to the finale – where the models breezed up, around, and out just about as quickly as they arrived.  How they walk that fast in heels up that runway I have no idea?

The Festival is far from over and we are especially looking forward to getting along to a a few of the Sustainability Events including The Spirit of the Black Dress; The Front Row; & Upcycling.  All sure to be very inspiring as sorella & me continues on the path for our maternity clothing to be as sustainable as possible. And you never know, one day we might be showing at the LMFF! (A girl can dream can’t she?)
